Carlyle Residence

The Carlyle residence is located just north of the Magnificent Mile in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. Designed by Hirschfeld Pawlan & Reinheimer, this building was completed in 1967. Known for their previous work designing what became the Playboy Hotel and is now called the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel, Hirschfeld Pawlan & Reinheimer promised that The Carlyle building would be another example of“unparalleled elegance and comfort.” They did not disappoint, designing a building that featured amenities such as an indoor pool and grand ballroom while showcasing sweeping views of Lake Michigan from each of the 40 units in the building. Today, The Carlyle is still considered one of the most prestigious residence towers in Chicago.

Our apartment included approximately 3,000 square feet of living space including 3 bedrooms and 4-½ bathrooms. Our scope consisted of the gut renovation of Kitchen, Laundry Room, Breakfast Area, and Butler’s Pantry including the upgrade of HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing, new cabinetry, appliances, and new lighting.

Residing out-of-state for the duration of construction, our clients engaged Integro to transform their space while managing long-distance communication through various mediums, including weekly video blogs to show construction progress. In collaboration with Beverly Hammel, the goal of this project was to bring these spaces into the modern era while maintaining the historical integrity of the original architecture.

As in all high-rise projects, Integro was challenged to deliver this project on time and on budget while accommodating the demands of the building management. This including extensive, daily protection the common hallways, use of common elevators without the benefit of pre-scheduled reservations, management of confined working hours, collaborating with building management for oversight, tying into pressurized common utility piping and chases, installation of required sound barriers, and working around the structural reinforced concrete without compromising the design intent.

Our final product delivered a mid-century modern kitchen which complimented the classic architecture of the existing building. The design capitalized on the incredible lake views to reimagine the space and provide a daily venue for renewed inspiration.
