Designed by famed modernist architect Bertrand Goldberg, The Astor tower was originally built as one of the ultimate luxury hotels, designed for the affluent and socially elite in the 1960s. In addition to serving as the structural prototype for other landmark buildings in Chicago, this building was strategically designed to maximize the fantastic city and lake views while featuring the most avant-garde and high-end technologies available at the time. Applying his hallmark french-style aesthetic, Goldberg made the Astor Tower an immersive experience of extravagance through his use of custom furnishing, paintings, and textiles throughout each unit while contrasting the lobby with a gleaming prism of steel and mirrors. Its private restaurant, Paris, was hidden in the basement of the building and was widely known to host royalty and celebrities alike.
